Albumin is the most commonly found protein in blood plasma. It is produced by the liver and plays several crucial roles in the body, maintaining colloid osmotic pressure in the blood to prevent fluids from leaking out and causing swelling (edema). Albumin also transports important hormones, vitamins and drugs and is the primary antioxidant in blood. As well as being critical for our health, albumin is important for the manufacture and formulation of many biological medicines, including vaccines.
